We have checked with folks here at Mauna Kea. The most correct naming is "Mauna a Wakea", pronounced MOW-nuh (rhymes with now-nuh) ah vah-kay-uh, which means "mountain of Wakea, the sky-father." The casual usage is the modern Mauna Kea, pronounced "MOW-nah Kay-ah." We have our pronunciation advice from the visitor center, from rangers, and on best authority from Kimo from the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center.
