10-Second Vacations #03 - Abandoned Hotel, Azores

(May 2, 2007) This Asian-themed hotel is at the top of a volcanic crater outside Ponta Delgada. It was built by a German developer who intended it to be used as a conference centre and luxury resort; clearly misunderstanding the reality of the Azorean tourism industry. The hotel closed as soon as it opened, and has been abandoned ever since. The day we visited, the fog had descended quickly and thickly, and the image of it blowing over the hotel made the whole thing even spookier.
